On Monday, Leicester City was crowned champion of the English Premier League.
Chelsea, the 2015 reigning champion of the Premier League, handed the crown to underdog Leicester City by scoring a late goal against Tottenham to tie the game 2-2. Tottenham’s tie against Chelsea makes it impossible for it to reach Leicester City, which now sits 7 points ahead with only 6 points at stake in the remaining two games of the season.
Tottenham looked in complete control at 2-0 up and on course for a first win at the home of Chelsea in a generation, only for the now-deposed champions to roar back into life. Spurs looked nervous at set pieces and so it proved as the ball fell fortunately for Gary Cahill to prod home from a corner.
Eden Hazard then met Diego Costa’s pass with a first-time shot into the top-right corner in the 83rd minute to send hordes of supporters in Leicester, as well as their millions of new admirers around the world, into raptures. The result means Leicester has an unassailable seven-point lead with two games remaining in the season, completing a fairytale title for the Foxes in one of football’s most unlikely title triumphs.
Leicester City made sports history by winning the toughest soccer league in the world, while just a couple years ago it was a team struggling to stay in the first division.Within a minute after the final whistle 140,000 tweets were sent worldwide that had the word “Leicester”, and after 5 minutes almost half a million tweets had been sent.
Since then, social media is going crazy. Sports stars like Rory McIlroy, world leaders like U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, and top artists like Adele have joined the social media party with their best wishes to Leicester City. With two weekends of the League still remaining, the live parties and the social media buzz have just started. It will be very interesting to watch the remaining events as they unfold, like the game in Leicester against Everton on Saturday, where the players will be received as heroes in the stadium. Or the game between Leicester City against Chelsea in London a week later, when Chelsea will officially hand over the crown.
