Semi Finals Netherlands VS Argentina
World Cup Semi Finals Results – Semi Finals Netherlands VS Argentina
FULL TIME: Netherlands 0-0 Argentina
*Argentina win 4-2 on penalties.
Argentina edged a nervy penalty shoot out 4-2 against Netherlands to book their spot in the FIFA World Cup Finals with Germany, after the match ended goalless in extra time. Both Argentina and Netherlands showed little ambition to commit players forward, with neither goalkeeper forced to make a meaningful save in normal time.
The clearest chance came in the 90th minute, when Arjen Robben exchanged passes with Wesley Sneijder in the dying minutes. However, Arjen Robben took a touch too many and Argentina defender Javier Mascherano managed to slide in and divert his shot. The game went into extra time as Rodrigo Palacio and Maxi Rodriguez forced Netherlands keeper Jasper Cillessen into routine stops, before Dirk Kuyt cannoned a half volley into an apponent with just seconds remaining.
As the game moved into penalties, it was Argentina who held their nerve from the spot, scoring all 4 of their penalties with stopper Sergio Romero saving from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder. While Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has been righty lauded for his tactical nous throughout the tournament, his decision to send Ron Vlaar up to take the first kick backfired when penalty specialist Arjen Robben and Klaas Jan Huntelaar were surely the better alternatives.
Argentina now face Germany in a mouth watering FIFA World Cup 2014 Finals in Rio.
